For the love of dimples...

There is something about those deep dimples that captures me, it makes the smile special.

I love how they show as the first thought of a smile crosses the mind, how they deepen when smile breaks out ,how they just brighten up the smile.

As a kid I have hoped that one day they would mysteriously appear on my cheeks. Those were the back in the old days , now it is time to dump the silly thoughts and get pratical ..So what if I cant get a dimple for myself ,I got the next best thing

yes that is my dimpled hubby :)

How was your weekend?

You are walking to your cubicle on a Monday morning ,the first familiar face says ..
Hello Good morning ,before you can reply comes the inevitable question .
"What did you do on the Weekend ? "
I considered this as one of the customary things one asked their colleagues and friends on Monday morning.
Coming from a place ,where the better part of one's week is spent stuck in horrible traffic jams, one would spent the weekends at home ,recovering from the fatigue and tiredness of the weekdays.
So the particular question didn't make much sense to me .
After a while of being at the receiving end,I devised a plan ,come Monday morning ,I would be the first one to ask the 'Question' .
O' boy do they enjoy the weekend or what !!
They went canoeing, kayaking, fishing, hunting, golfing and the list was endless..
I realised weekends could be put to better use than sleeping and eating, coz there are a lot of things one could do ,when a distance of 16 miles can be covered in less than 20 minutes and doesn't have to spent hours on road waiting for the traffic to move.
Then on, I made it a point to do something or plan something for the weekends.
So now ask you guys...how was your weekend ?

Surviving the motorised rickshaw

Long after you move out of a city ,there are certain things about the city which will never fade from your memories..the smell ,the food, the heat and the auto drivers are some things which still remains fresh in my mind from my days in chennai ..
Yes ,the auto drivers and the endless fights with them.
How do you pick a fight all the time ,you ask.
Let me tell you .
You are new to a city ,armed with sign language, trying to find your way to all those different places.
Enter the auto , you get in ,give him the address ,Auto starts .
You get down 10 minutes later ,driver pulls out a number from air and presents it as the fare.
And the fight starts.
After a few more similar incidents ,you realize that the Meter is just a decorative item like the First Aid Box ,And to never step into the auto without agreeing on the fare.
There are a few things one should know to survive the autos and to avoid bankruptcy
Lets say you are on the look out for an auto.
1.Don't ever go to parked auto ..specially if the driver is reading , sitting around blissfully listening to thundering music.Stay away from them
2.Wait for 'running' auto .Signal all possibly empty rushing auto
3.Practice your tamil ,until one of them stops.(If they get a whiff that you are not from chennai and you don't know Tamil, then you don't stand a chance)
4.When one of them stops over , ask 'Insert Your Destination' 'pokuma' ,don't show any signs of eagerness or hurry ..even if you are dying to jump in and start off to your destination
5.If the driver agrees ...pop Ur next question ..Evalavu?
(If you are at this step ,the driver knows that you are seasoned player)
6. Divide the fare qouted by the driver by 2 and tell him that is all that you are willing to pay.
7.Then the bargain starts...make a note .don't fall for arguments like route to your destination is 'one way' etc..
8.After 3 minutes of bargaining ,if things are not going your way .it is time to use your most important tactics.
9.Tell the driver he can go on and pretend to start looking out for other autos(This could be your winning move ,has success rate of 95% )
10.Driver continues to mumble for a few seconds, and then agrees to your quoted fare .
You jump into the auto and start off your journey.
Headphones might come handy to escape driver's mumbling
These are a few pointers ,but nothing can prepare you for the real thing .. so if you are heading to Chennai..don't forget my tips !!

A Wedding That Wasnt

Way before I reached the legal marrying age ,I had quite a few ideas for my marriage. These ideas were primarily formed based on the prior weddings and engagements functions I had been dragged to. Those functions gave me a clear idea what and how I didnt want my Marriage to be.
What I wanted
1.A quiet and peaceful function
2.Location X (= the current favourite)
3.No huge crowds of unknown and unheard relatives of relatives
4.To look stunningly beautiful
5.Allowance for a huge shopping spree
6.To be Pampered silly to the point of no return
7.To have loads of fun
That is all ,a small but very practical list .I had the approval of achan, who used to tell me that once I am old enough,he will have no say in any of my decisions ,be it work, marriage or anything else I wanted to do.All these were said and done a long time ago.
Coming to the present .
When I thought I was old enough ,I told achan about the guy I chose. He conveniently forgot all his earlier promises and sulked for months .
Finally he came out of it with a huge list.List of all the people to be invited. When I told him on my intension of keeping it small , he said that marriage is a social obligation and it cannot be done anyway else. That is to say that everyone in the list has to be invited .Cross item 3 .
Venue was decided by both the set of parents, Cross item 2.
No Compromise on the 3 day long ceremonies decision maker unknown ,cross item 1 .
To add to my myseries there was a relocation ,which led to a job change, which ate up my planned shopping time.Reducing the elaborate shopping spree I had dreamed of, to the level of a chore .Another item down the drain.
Wedding Day ..All focus on item 4.
Time to get ready. There was a beautician to help in this task .She irritated the hell out of me and in turn I ended up looking like hell .One glance at myself in the mirror and I stormed out .Went back to my room and undid all that she did . We were running out of time ,muhoorthum was slipping .There was banging on the door, asking me to start to the venue, causing a small argument ,leading to a few tears .
I reached the venue ,pretty late and with a grumpy face .We almost missed the muhurthum,so the priests had to cut short the wedding ceremony to tying of the mangal sutra ,pheras and other ceremony had to be moved to another 'auspicious' hour in the afternooon.By 7 PM we were finally done with all the ceremonies .On the way home I crossed off last item on the list. But I was happy, cause that day I added the lone item missing in the list. A great guy .
Note:The "guy" has promised yours truly the dream wedding ,on our 10th wedding anniversary. So let me get back to my list.
